Greg Burghardt, President & CEO of Arrow Engineering Inc. is pleased to share news that Arrow Engineering Inc. has been acknowledged as a PSMJ Circle of Excellence firm. Ranked against firms located throughout North America, members of this prestigious circle demonstrate “both the basic and creative best practices in business”, within the AEC industry.
“We are honored to be recognized and included in this well-respected group”, states Burghardt, who also shares that “we are enjoying robust, well managed growth, and as such are able to continuously attract new talent, and significant projects across Western Canada. Our progressive approach to both our work and relationships, along with this acknowledgement, distinguishes us from our competition.”
Winners of PSMJ’s Circle of Excellence represent a broad range of leading architecture and engineering firms. “The diversity of these firms is proof that success isn’t necessarily defined by the size of a firm, or their practice area … but instead by a strong commitment to solid business practices,” says Kate Allen, PE and Director of PMSJ’s AEC Industry Services division…in today’s economy, top-notch business practices are critical for our sustainability.”
PMSJ’s exclusive Circle of Excellence is designed to recognize firms that are successfully managed, based on 13 key performance metrics that demonstrate outstanding achievements relative to profitability, overhead, cash flow, productivity, business development, staff growth, and turnover. The Circle of Excellence represents the top tier of participants in PMSJ’s annual A/E Financial Performance Benchmark Survey.
As always, we recognize that our success is shared, and would not be possible without the contributions of our loyal staff, and our valued relationships with clients and industry colleagues. We’d like to take this opportunity to express our most sincere thanks to all of the individuals who have helped us to achieve this significant milestone.

The year has come and gone, and we find ourselves in the midst of another holiday season. In taking a moment to reflect on the past year, we are struck by the knowledge that our continued growth and success hinges entirely on the contributions of our loyal staff, and associations with our valued clients and industry colleagues; how truly blessed we all are. As we prepare to spend time with our families and friends, we take this opportunity to pause, and reflect on how truly fortunate we are. At Arrow, we firmly believe that we are a part of something greater than ourselves, and are certain that the abundance of blessings in our lives are meant to be shared with others; specifically, those who are challenged with illness or misfortune.
Throughout 2013, we have had the privilege of partnering with a number of charitable organizations, and causes which champion individuals who are in need. Arrow and our team of Employees have been pleased to give back in a number of ways, including gifts in kind, monetary donations, volunteering time, and other unique initiatives. These noteworthy causes include a Habitat for Humanity build, and the CANstruction event, benefiting the Edmonton Food Bank; we’re proud to have supported more than 40 organizations in both Alberta and Saskatoon this past year.
In keeping with Arrow’s holiday tradition, we have chosen to donate to select organizations, who we feel strongly about providing additional reinforcement this holiday season. Our team has already gathered to participate in a gift exchange and donation to Santa’s Anonymous, giving the joy of Christmas to families and children in need.
In lieu of gifts, we’re pleased to announce that we have committed to a substantial in-kind contribution to Wellspring Edmonton. The intention of Wellspring is to create an atmosphere for cancer patients that is distinct from hospitals and clinics. At Wellspring, “the emphasis is on the person, not on the illness.” Visit www.wellspringedmonton.ca, for more information. Similarly, we have also supported Sorrentino’s Compassion House, and more recently the Edmonton Opera, with in-kind charitable contributions, further reinforcing their respective development goals for 2013.
In addition, and in light of the recent devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, we have chosen to donate to the Red Cross, towards much needed relief efforts in the Philippines. Visit http://www.redcross.ca/donate , to learn more.
And finally, our Saskatoon team has elected to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. The Children’s Hospital Foundation “is dedicated to raising funds for the enhancement of children’s healthcare and the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan,” a cause we wholeheartedly stand behind. For more information, visit www.childrenshospitalsask.ca.
The leadership team at Arrow realizes that our success is shared, and as such is dependent upon the synergies we have with our Employees, Colleagues, and Clients. Please accept our most sincere and humble thanks for this ongoing collaboration. May you and your loved ones have great joy, peace, and prosperity this holiday season and in the coming year. Merry Christmas!

On Saturday, September 28, members of the Arrow team gathered to contribute to Arrow’s annual Habitat Build Day. This years’ project was located in Neufeld Landing, which, according to Habitat Edmonton, is Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s largest build to date, and the largest Habitat development in Canadian History.
This initiative represents, our collective desire to engage within the communities we live, work, and play in. In the words of team lead, Francis de Grano, “I made sure to make myself available to be part of this year’s Habitat for Humanity event, as I was unable to attend last year. The mechanical and electrical design were developed in-house in our Edmonton office. As I was involved in the mechanical design, I was really curious to see how these houses would be built. This is such a wonderful initiative to help end homelessness and give people a hand toward improving their quality of life. Everyone that participated in the event enjoyed giving their time to a worthwhile cause; we’re all looking forward to taking part next year.”
We’re proud to have such generous, caring people at Arrow, and are honored to be a part of something so significant. As always, we encourage our industry friends and colleagues to join is in supporting great local causes like Habitat for Humanity. Learn more about Habitat: http://www.hfh.org/

We are proud to announce that we at Arrow Engineering Inc. (Saskatoon Office) were recently awarded our 100th project.
This achievement, and our continued growth and success, would not be possible without the exceptional work and dedication of our employees, clients, and industry colleagues – located in Saskatoon and across Saskatchewan – who have supported the efforts of Arrow Saskatoon through a range of mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering projects.
We established our Saskatoon Office in 2010 with Richard Murray at the helm. As Arrow Saskatoon began to grow, Richard was joined by Odhner Ong, in July 2013, as Engineer / Senior Project Manager. With continued growth, Whit Pointon and Chris Tulloch, both of whom are Design Technologists, joined the team later in the year. As many of you are aware, Richard is returning to Calgary this fall, to be closer to his family. While Richard will undoubtedly be missed, Odhner Ong has agreed to take on the role of Vice President, and will continue to provide leadership in the region.
Arrow Saskatoon has been host to some great events and has seen impressive growth in just a few short years. Over this recent year, we hosted an Open House, relocated our office, and held our first Arrow ‘Foot In The Door’ golf clinic campaign for Saskatchewan-based clients, industry colleagues, and partners. We have tremendous gratitude for all who participated or supported us over the course of this very eventful year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank RBM Architecture, the client behind this important project milestone—along with the many people and organizations who have helped us along the way. It is our relationships with local clients and industry partners in this region who have helped Arrow Saskatoon to establish itself firmly in the community, and we are truly thankful for these partnerships.
Congratulations to our Saskatoon team, on this truly impressive milestone.

2,500 Cans. 150 Hours. Endless Enthusiasm.
On Saturday, May 5, 2013, the Arrow CANstruction team met bright and early with 14 competing teams in Enterprise Square, to take part in CANstruction 2013. Our determined volunteers tackled the technical and creative endeavor of building a larger-than-life vintage Nintendo controller, emblazoned with the theme “Hunger Game Over.” Inspired by the recognizable symbol of a video game controller, our CANstruction team used hundreds of cans, countless yards of tape, and good old-fashioned manual labour to construct the structure shown above.
The words of our very own Jarad Watson, project team leader, “CANstruction was a great team building exercise that allowed us to ‘give back’ to our community through an outstanding event and organization. It was also a great opportunity to spend time with colleagues outside of the workplace, while helping others in need.”
Besides being a unique way to team-build, CANstruction’s primary benefit is the incredible contributions participating teams make to Edmonton’s Food Bank. CANstruction provides the opportunity for design oriented individuals to use their specific gifts to help those less fortunate. At Arrow, we believe strongly in the importance of investing in our communities; the Edmonton Food Bank is just one of the organizations our team members feel strongly about donating their time to. Lara Masse, a member of Arrow’s leadership team, commented that “We are proud of the culture and generous atmosphere of our work environment. We recognize that our impact is multiplied when we assemble and work together. Our team was excited by the opportunity to support our community in such a creative manner.”
Keegan Harley, one of our youngest contributor’s brought youthful enthusiasm to the day. When inquiring about the event, Keegan remarked that he hoped Arrow’s team would win, and that “the prize is a million dollars for the food bank, to help all the hungry people in Edmonton so that they won’t be hungry anymore.” At the close of CANstruction, Arrow’s team was extremely proud to receive an Honorable Mention for recognizable symbol, coming in a close second to Nintendo’s 90’s nemesis: KoolAid man.
CANstruction provides the opportunity for organizations to combat hunger in our community in a creative and hands-on manner. Upon the close of CANstruction, the countless cans used in the structures are donated to local food banks. CANstruction will be open to the public in the Enterprise Square Atrium, downtown, from May 5-22, 2013. We encourage you to take time to stop by the exhibit, with your colleagues or family members in tow, to view our structure, and, more importantly, to drop off a donation for the Edmonton Food Bank. We plan on competing next year and sincerely hope that our industry friends and associates will consider participating in CANstruction.

As the year draws to a close, it is natural to reflect upon all the exciting things that have happened over the last 12 months. In doing so, we at Arrow Engineering Inc. are humbled and extremely grateful to see the many valued relationships that have been cultivated and the continued growth Arrow has experienced; how blessed we truly are. We remain steadfast in our belief that we are all a part of something greater than only ourselves. As such, we have stayed the course with our commitment to share knowledge and resources to positively contribute to the communities in which we live, work, and play.
Dedicated to instilling a culture of generosity in our work environment, and recognizing that our impact is multiplied when we assemble and work together, we have been privileged to partner with a number of organizations, to further the achievement of common goals while providing hope and perhaps a stronger voice to those in our own community who are often marginalized or hurting.
Over the past year, Arrow and our team of Employees have been pleased to give back in various ways including gifts in kind, charitable donations, volunteering time, and other unique initiatives, including the upcycling of large format paper into notebooks for children involved in local programs. In total we have supported more than 40 organizations in both Alberta and Saskatoon.
This holiday season, as in the past few years, we will once again take steps to donate to a few of the organizations whom we view as being very much in need at this time. In lieu of gifts, our team has gathered to participate in a gift exchange and donation to Santa’s Anonymous, giving the joy of Christmas to families and children in need.
We are also at this time, making a substantial contribution to Sorrentino’s Compassion House, through a gift of service.
Finally, we have selected two charities to receive cash donations.
Our first benefactor for the 2012 holiday season is Be Brave Ranch / Little Warriors who has a goal to raise $3.4M to purchase and develop a new facility that will be dedicated to providing a safe and secure place of healing for child victims and their families—those who are affected by sexual abuse. The intention for Be Brave Ranch, is “to treat 40 kids each and every month. That’s 480 transformed souls a year.” Visit http://littlewarriors.ca/you-can-help/be-brave-ranch/ to learn more.
Our second benefactor will be Engineers Without Borders – Building a World of Opportunity. This movement of professional engineers, students, overseas volunteer staff, and supporters across Canada, believes that the next generation of rural Africans should have the same opportunities to improve their lives, that we have right here at home. To learn more about Engineers Without Borders, visit http://edmonton.ewb.ca/donors-partners/.
In closing, the leadership team at Arrow realizes that our success is shared, and as such is dependent upon both our Employees and Clients.
Please accept our very best wishes to you and your loved ones. May you have great joy, peace, and prosperity this holiday season and in the coming year. Merry Christmas!
