Weatherford Labs offer “all facets of rock and fluid analysis for the purpose of evaluating hydrocarbon resources around the world. [Weatherford] services include core retrieval, analysis and management; geochemical assessments; unconventional reservoir evaluation; and, consulting and engineering services”. The Weatherford team was overdue for a single, cohesive space for their expanding team and operations. With five-year growth planning in mind, Weatherford purchased approximately 100,000 SF of existing office space in Northeast Calgary, with the plan of amalgamating staff from three separate Weatherford locations into this single new space.
Arrow’s Mechanical and Electrical teams tackled the challenge of converting existing “standard’ office space into numerous labs and testing areas for the Weatherford team, in addition to required administrative space. Given the volume of testing areas, there were a large range of design requirements, including considerations for CT / Helical Scanners, X-Ray rooms, large freezer / coolers for sample storage, viewing spaces, H2S labs, a Gamma room, a specialized photography lab complete with black lights for the analysis of core samples, as well as standard office space, fitness space, and shipping / receiving space.
Mechanical requirements associated with this project were extensive; as such our Mechanical team was required to design many ‘non-standard’ systems, including air-conditioning (constant cooling to maintain a consistent temperature) to the ‘Dean Stark Hoods’ (used for heating of chemicals, containment in the event of explosions). In many labs, our Mechanical was required to design the supply of fresh ‘breathing air’ from drop down supplies in the ceiling, as well as specialized ventilation for many of the various lab spaces (H2S Lab, Brewing Lab, PVT Lab, etc.) Given the extremely large volume of equipment in the building, our Electrical team designed an overhead cable tray raceway system throughout the building, additionally the ‘Core Viewing Room’ required the design of black lights. Gas detection alarm systems were installed throughout H2S labs, and tied into the fire alarm system which is designed to call HAZMAT teams in addition to the regular fire dispatch teams.
